Ancient Cup with Zodiacal Signs

The cup is elaborately decorated on the inside and on the outside.

Inside

The inside shows imagery related to water, wealth and abundance.

  • At the centre is a rectangular fish pond.
  • Grouped around it are the river god Nile with cornucopia (left), a crocodile with a hawk’s head (right), and two standing figures: The one on the left is hawk-headed with a double-horned crown, holding staff-like attributes. The one to the right is a goddess with kithara and Isis crown.
  • Below the pond are lotus flowers and a depiction of Isis-Demeter holding two ears of grain in her right hand.

Outside

  • Isis-Sothis is depicted in the centre, seated on a dog and holding a torch as well as a cornucopia.
  • She is surrounded by the twelve signs of the Zodiac (inner circle) and various deities and symbols (outer circle).
  • Among these deities seem to be Luna (top) and Sol (to her right).
  • Other depictions show a winged scarab, a falcon-headed crocodile, and a person in a boat, potentially Harpokrates.
  • What is rather unusual is the changing orientation of the figures.
