In these ancient Egyptian Osiris bricks soil was molded into the shape of Osiris, god of vegetation, fertility, regeneration, and ruler of the dead. Thickly sown with grain and kept moist until the grain sprouted and grew, these figures were created as part of a ritual carried out in association with the Osirian Festival of Khoiak.
The Grain Osiris symbolized the resurrection of Osiris and visualized the analogy between the sowing and thriving of grain and the burial and resurrection of mortal humans.
